We Were The Champions (1)

Richmond’s London League team, under Gavin Wall’s captaincy, finished second to perennial champions Wood Green last season.

Our name appears on the honours board twice: we won the league in the 1975-76 and 1987-88 seasons.

As it happens, I was club secretary for several years in the mid 70s, before the demands of RJCC became too much for me to continue. I kept complete records of all match results, which I still have.

I thought you might like to see how we won our first title, and as today is the 43rd anniversary of the first match of the season, it seems to good time to start. We were off to a poor start, though, with a heavy defeat against much lower graded opponents from Harrow. You’ll notice as we go through the season that, although several other players are still active, I’m the only one still playing for Richmond.
