British Championship London 1907
I’m currently researching the life and games of the strong amateur George Edward Wainwright, who lived and played chess, at various times, in Teddington and Surbiton. He’ll be featured in articles on British Chess News shortly.
In this position he was White against another player with local connections, Joseph Henry Blake, who lived in Kingston for many years.
Wainwright played 24. Nxg7!, when 24… Kxg7 can be met by 25. Nf5+ Kh8 26. Rxd5! (Bxd5 is also winning) when White has too many threats. In the game Black tried 24… Re3 25. Ngf5 Bxf4 26. Nxe3 Bxe3, when after 27. Nf5 White was winning easily.
