Chess Puzzle of the Week (238): Solution

On Monday I set you a helpmate in 5 moves (Bo Lindgren 2nd Prize Tidskrift för Schack 1945)

The solution (it’s conventional in helpmates to write Black’s move first) is 1. Ba1 h8R+ 2. Kg7 Rxa8 3. Rd7 Rxa1 4. Kf8 Rh1 5. Ke8 Rh8#.

White underpromotes to a rook which then visits all four corners of the board, returning to the promotion square to deliver checkmate. One of my pupils was in hysterics once he’d worked out the solution. I hope you were too!

Congratulations to Roger and to everyone else who managed to solve it.
