Chess Puzzle of the Week (243): Solution

On Monday I left you with this helpmate in 5½, composed by Stephen Taylor and published in the January 2023 issue of The Problemist Supplement.

Conventionally, solutions to helpmates are published with the black move first in each pair.

The solution here runs like this: 1… Kb4 2. Kc2 f5 3. Kd3 f4 4. Ke4 c5 5. Kd5 f3 6. Bd4 c4#.

All the white pieces advance one square up the board, with first the black king and then the black bishop moving into place.

You can play it through here – click on any move for a pop-up window.

I hope you enjoyed this, and managed to find the solution.
