Chess Puzzle of the Week (373)

I’m currently researching the early years of women’s chess, and was surprised to find out that there were several lady problemists of whom I wasn’t previously aware.

I had no idea that, way back in 1882, there was a Ladies’ International Two-Move Tournament.

Here’s the problem that won first prize, composed by Kate Smith (née Carden (1849-1944), known at the time as Mrs Arthur Smith) from Brighton.

It’s White to play and mate in 2 moves, against any defence.

Good luck, and best wishes for 2026 to all members and friends of Richmond & Twickenham Chess Club.
