Chess Puzzle of the Week (293): Solution

Monday’s position was taken from the game between Tim Seymour (Surbiton & ex-RJCC) and GM Peter Wells played the other day in the English Championships.

White, to play, is a pawn up but under a lot of pressure. There is only one way for him to stay in the game, and perhaps it’s not so obvious.

The move is 25. e4!, planning Rf5 to block the attack on the f-file, but sadly Tim was unable to find it over the board.

Here’s the game: I’ve added some critical variations to Stockfish’s annotations. As always, click on any move for a pop-up window.
