Chess Puzzle of the Week (347): Solution

On Monday I left you with this endgame study composed by Paul Michelet (British Chess Magazine June 2025).

Here’s the solution: click on any move for a pop-up window.

Ian Watson, who conducts the BCM Endgame Studies column, comments:

Two underpromotions. A natural and light position. Only pawns on the board. Plus, an ‘Excelsior’: a pawn advance from its starting square all the way to promotion. Even a ‘try’: a White move which nearly solves, failing only to a single Black defence. It’s a thematic ‘try’ too, one whose refutation coheres with the solution, and it incorporates a second Excelsior. All that and the study only has seven men, so it’s a miniature too. Truly an excellent composition.

Congratulations to everyone who found the complete solution, including the stalemate and both underpromotions.
