Back in the day, chess was a surprisingly big thing amongst London bus drivers.

For a time, Fulwell Bus Garage had a team in the Thames Valley League, and, for about 20 years from the early 1950s through to the early 1970s problem composing competitions were held, from 1957 onwards being incorporated into the Busmen’s Chess Review, which also attracted many of the world’s leading composers of the day.

Bus driver Harry Gunning was a regular prize winner in their competitions: I’ll be writing more about him and his brother Ralph, also a composer, very shortly.
